Maine’s nationally recognized Ogunquit Playhouse has announced that The Nutty Professor, a new musical based on the beloved 1963 Jerry Lewis film comedy, will premiere as part of the theatre’s 2022 season. The show, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes, was slated to premiere in Nashville in 2012, with hopes of a future Broadway run. Those plans were cancelled due to Hamlisch’s death, and the musical has not been produced since.
Like its film inspiration, the musical explores the adventures of nerdy Professor Julius Kelp, whose newly discovered potion transforms him into the suave and sophisticated Buddy Love.
The Ogunquit production will run from July 1 to August 6, directed by Marc Bruni, director of the Tony-winning Broadway hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Casting for the production will be announced at a later date.
