THE NEW YORK TIMES - This sweet and inspirational autobiographical tale is a requiem of sorts for its author, the late Emmy, Grammy and Oscar-winning composer, who died before his first picture book was published. But what a musical life he lived — and from such a tender age! Hamlisch’s piano skills got him into Juilliard at the age of 6. The book, which includes a CD, concentrates on his early days: the itchy suits, the butterflies in the belly, the importance of wild dreams. Note to parents: Young Marvin never wanted to practice, either. (Pamela Paul — The New York Times. Nov. 9, 2012)

Children’s Book: Marvin Makes Music

The hardcover book, featuring illustrations by Jim Madsen, includes a CD with the song “The Music in My Mind” by Hamlisch and his Nutty Professor collaborator Rupert Holmes.

Read: Thank you note to Jim Madsen for the beautiful illustrations.

Marvin Makes Music” was completed prior to Hamlisch’s death on Aug. 6 at the age of 68. The book tells the autobiographical story of Hamlisch’s acceptance into Juilliard School at the age of six.

Judy Clurman: Comments about the recording of the song for the Children’s book “Marvin Makes Music”

Watch: November 8th, 2012: Friends, Family and Fans of Marvin Hamlisch gathered to celebrate the publishing of his only children’s book “Marvin Makes Music.”

Here’s how Amazon.com describes the book:

Marvin loves to play the piano and compose his own songs. But performing music over and over that’s composed by some old guys name Ludwig and Wolfgang just gives him knots in his stomach. When his father tells Marvin he has an audition with the most prestigious music school, how can Marvin overcome his nerves and get swept away by the music? This endearing book is based on the true-life story of composer Marvin Hamlisch, who, at the age of six, was the youngest person ever accepted into the Juilliard School.”

Hamlisch is one of 11 people to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award. He also received the Pulitzer Prize for A Chorus Line, his most iconic work. His other theatre works include the musicals They’re Playing Our Song, Jean Seberg, Smile, The Goodbye Girl and Sweet Smell of Success. He also wrote songs for Nora Ephron’s play Imaginary Friends. His latest show, The Nutty Professor, recently played at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, TN. Click here to read more about his life and career.
